Janie was not happy in her first marriage with Logan. She felt like she was more forced than having a choice to be with him. Her grandmother advise her to marry him for support and protection but she was unhappy. Her second marriage with Joe, in the beginning, she felt like a woman making her own decision and running off with a man she felt safe and happy. After Joe became mayor, she felt that had too much ego, that he did't recognize her as his wife who very much loved him support him. She felt trapped. Her third marriage with Tea Cake made her feel competent that she made a choice to be with, knowing that he showed so much valued in her.

Janie's relationship with her first husband Logan wasn't so good because she didn't love him. She married him because her grandmother wanted her to, she wanted Janie to have someone that can take care of her if her grandmother dies. Janie thought Logan was so ugly and she didn't have any type of communication with him, he didn't speak to her in a lovey dovey way.

Janie first husband was Logan Killicks. This was her first marriage. She got married at 16,however she came to realize through her miserable marriage that love does not come with marriage and it can't be arranged. The lesson she also learned is that both people(husband and wife) most devote equal time and attention to having a happy marriage. She changed because she realized that her grandmother was wrong with her teaching and the lessons she learned about love and marriage she took with her to her second husband Joe.

Janie's first husband was Logan Killicks. This relationship was different because it was the first time that Janie got married to someone. Also, in this marriage we can see that she got married because Nanny told her she would be in a good economic and better status getting married with Logan, and bad rumors would go away from the white people. In this marriage Janie didn't show love at all, and it was just a sad and lonely marriage which Janie completely broke when she cheated with Joe Starks. In this marriage she cheated and didn't feel love in any way.

Janie's first marriage was with Logan Killicks. It wasn't a good marriage because Janie didn't truly love him. Marriage is based on the idea of love, so what type of relationship was there really? Janie's grandmother wanted her to marry him for the protection and security, but deep down Janie was unhappy. Janie's second marriage was to Joe Starks. In the beginning of the relationship she felt happy with Joe because she was making her own choices. After Joe became mayor Janie felt as if he developed an ego and arrogance in a way. Joe was very controlling. Janie's last marriage was to Tea Cake. Tea Cake supported Janie 100% and she loved him very much. She felt free and could be herself around him. Janie evolved very much throughout each marriage. She went from caring about what everybody was saying about her to being non nonchalant about rumors. She even started dressing differently. Lastly, Janie got happier.

The relationship Janie had with her first husband Logan Killicks wasn't as well as she had hoped for it to be. This was her first marriage so she wasn't sure of what was to come, she envisioned her marriage to be full of love. During her marriage her interpretation of "love" changed she discovered that love was the opposite.

With Janie's first husband Logan Killicks she was forced by her grandmother to marry him. She felt as if love comes with marriage but she soon learned otherwise. Soon after they were married she visited her grandma and told her that she didn't love Logan. During this marriage Logan she realized that it wasn't what she thought it wound be like. Logan wanted her to do work as well and to not just be sitting around the house doing nothing. After this she realized that she deserved better than what he was giving her.

Janie grew throughout all three relationships she had. Janie's first husband with Logan Killicks wasn't what she was looking for. Janie's grandmother caught her kissing Johnny Taylor and Janie show that she was becoming a woman. She was forced by her grandmother to marry him because he had money and land, but on the emotional level she didn't have any feelings for him. Janie was waiting for the moment to runaway and leave Logan to show her sense of strength. Janie got that chance when she met Joe Starks. In the beginning she was happy with Joe. He made her laugh, smile, gave her the world and had big visions/plans to make the world a better place. After Joe became mayor of the town he became overprotective as well. Controlling everything Janie wore and not letting her speak her mind or even speaking for herself. When Joe was laying his death bed Janie knew that she had to speak her mind before it was to late she knew that she couldn't let Joe had anymore power over life. Even though Janie went through two marriages that wasn't anything how she expected them to be she didn't give up on love. Janie meet a man named Tea Cake they instantly got married she seems so desperate for love. Tea Cake is very respectful and romantic with Janie. Janie has her doubts one day about Tea Cake , but Janie was wrong Tea Cake tries to do the best he can to make Janie happy. Janie became stronger and smarter after her marriage with Logan she thought she had a sense of what she wanted in a marriage. When Joe died she was a mess because the type of relationship she had with him it took a toll on her afterwards she was so naive, couldn't realize right from wrong.

The first man that Janie married was Logan Killicks, but the only reason why she married Logan was because her grandmother, the last living relative that she knew wanted her to be safe with somebody when she pasted away. But Janie did not want to marry Logan, she was still a teenager, and like most, she dreamed of finding true love and running away and getting married living happily ever after. Being with Logan wouldn't have given her that, he was much older than she was and she honestly wasn't attracted to him. But she had to marry him regardless for her grandmother's sake, not her own. Logan started out being really nice to her; doing favors, and doing all the work, but after a while, he stopped being sweet on her and wanted her to do work so he wouldn't be doing everything by herself. At the time, Janie was about 16/17 years old, so she doesn't have much experience with anything at all. It was during this time that Janie realized that love was just a figment of the imagination and to just let the dream go because she wasn't going to find it with Logan. But she started to do some work when Logan left one day to get another mule and that same day, she met Joe Starks. She thought he was the greatest thing, I think it was because of his confidence and his swagger, he had the confidence of a white man so to speak. They spent the whole day talking and Janie just knew she was in love. After a painful conversation with Logan, she left him the next day to travel to Florida with Joe to help start a black owned town. Every man in town wanted Janie, but she was married to Joe now. And just like Logan, he started off real sweet, but not too long after arriving at the town, and after Joe was proclaimed the Mayor, he put Janie a pedestal so high that she could not communicate or socialize with anybody because they were all "beneath" her status as the Mayor's wife. Joe was becoming possessive not wanting anybody to admire her hair and not wanting her to be involved in town events. He just wanted her to be bottled up only for himself and Janie stayed miserable with him for almost 20 years. At the beginning of the marriage, she believed love had come to her at last, but was quickly proven wrong that long isn't an instant thing. As Joe lay on his death bed, Janie tried to tell him everything that she felt for all those years, but Joe hadn't changed a bit and didn't want to hear it, he didn't even want her in the room. Joe died hearing Janie tell him how unhappy she felt that they had been married for 20 years and he didn't know a single thing about her. As a widow, she was supposed to mourn the death of her husband. She wore the mourning clothes she was supposed to, but she honestly didn't feel that sad to mourn. Yes, Joe was her husband, but he didn't act like one, he simply acted like a possessive man with power, but he died a coward. Not even a year passed when Janie met Tea Cake. He can into the store she worked in and was being really nice and sweet on her. He did something that no guy had ever done for her, he taught her something. He taught her how to play checkers and quickly knew how to make Janie feel good about herself. Janie kept trying to fight it because the last time she quickly fell for a guy, she was stuck in a loveless twenty year marriage. But this time she couldn't help it because her and Tea Cake connected so well. The entire town was upset because a year hadn't passed yet and she was always hanging out with Tea Cake, dressing nice and always going out. People thought she was acting out of her class, but she was geniunly happy because Tea Cake let her be herself instead of holding her back like Joe. She blossomed more into a person with Tea Cake than she did in the twenty years she was with Joe. She was, for the first time her life, able to experience unconditional love from a man.

Janie has had three husbands in her life, first husband was Logan Killicks, second was Joe Starks and the last one was Tea Cake. Before marrying her first husband, Janie believed love is what every woman needs and her life would be complete is she was married. That idea was completely changed when she married Logan Killicks.

Janie's first husband was Logan Killicks. This was her first marriage and she was only 16. She eventually realized that her marriage was horrible and love does not come with marriage and it cannot be arranged. She learned through this that in a marriage that both partners must devote their time and efforts to have a happy marriage. She changed because she realized that her grandmother was wrong about her teachings and lessons about love and marriage.

During Janies first relationship, she felt forced and unhappy. Logan Killicks was her husband so she wont be independent and she would have someone to live with and support her after her grandmothers death. This is why she left him for Joe Starks. She felt happy when around Joe, so she decided to run away with him, assuming he was a better husband than Logan. After realizing how controlling Joe was, she became unhappy again but stood with him until he died. When he died, she enjoyed Tea Cakes company. Soon after, they married and she actually likes him. Janie rarely got upset with Tea Cake, and he always showed his love for her. Throughout her marriages, it is obvious that Janie has changed and developed when it comes to love and relationships. When she was with him she acknowledged what it meant to not love someone. When she was with Joe she realized how it felt to think you love someone when you really don't. Tea cake, though, showed Janie what real love is. Everything he did was for her, and if or when she got upset at something he did, he explained why he had done it, which was usually for her. He made sure she understood how he felt for her, and that made her know what love is and love him back.

When Janie married her first husband Logan, she had very little experience. I say this because she had been contently questioning her self, her love and her marriage. This was because her grandmother thought Janie would be better off to marry at a young age (16-17). Better off to marry a man like Logan, who had money and a stable life. Plus the only family Janie had was her grandmother who day by day was getting older. The sad thing was Janie had married a man she had no love for. Janie's relationship with Logan had been deal-able, this relationship/marriage had made her a women.

Eventually that led to verbal and physical abuse. Which ended the relationship and marriage they had.

Janie's relationships with all 3 husbands has been different. Her first husband Logan was nice and sweet at first but then things changed. Logan began being mean and started beating Janie. Logan became lazy and wanted Janie to do all his work and be a house wife with no freedom. Janie thought when she married Logan she would learn to love him but instead she grew to hate him.
